After the loss of her husband, 88-year-old Misao Ihara found solace in an unlikely companion — her deaf cat Fukumaru, whose name means “good fortune.” Misao rescued Fukumaru after discovering him abandoned in a warehouse.
Misao’s granddaughter, Miyoko Ihara, began documenting their unique bond through a heartfelt photo series, which later became the 2012 book “Misao the Big Mama & Fukumaru the Cat.” The book shares many more touching moments of their life together beyond these images shared with the media.
Fukumaru passed away in 2015, and Misao peacefully passed in 2021 at the age of 97.
